The China Conservatory Composition Department was established in 1964, aiming to nurture the creative skills of young composers by giving them a firm understanding of compositional technique and theory. The department also provides training in the areas of theory and solf¨¨ge, as well as in electronic music. It is organized into the following divisions: Composition, Harmony and Counterpoint, Musical Form and Instrumentation, Solf¨¨ge, and Electronic Music. Courses include: Composition, Harmony, Counterpoint, Musical Form and Analysis, Orchestral Composition, Contemporary Compositional Technique, Traditional Compositional Technique and Style, Folk Melody and Musical Form, and MIDI and Computer Composition. Requisite courses for majoring students include: Chinese Ethnic Music Overview, Chinese Folk Melody, Chinese Instrumental Performance and Percussion Ensemble, Solf¨¨ge, Chorus, Modern Piano Documents, Operatic Art, and Music History.
In 1984, the Composition Department created the Electronic Music Laboratory, upon which basis the Music Engineering Classroom and the Multimedia Music Center were later formed. Courses are offered in MIDI and Computer Composition, and Acoustical Directing.
At the present time, the Composition Department consists of 14 professors, 9 assistant professors, 9 lecturers, 3 teaching assistants, over 60 undergraduate students, and a number of graduate research students.
