The China Conservatory Musicology Department aims to cultivate in its students broad musicological knowledge, enabling them to engage in teaching, research, editing, criticism, and administration. Graduates in Musicology are equipped to enter schools and universities, arts and culture organizations, research institutes, publishing companies, as well as radio, television, and movie production studios.
The China Conservatory Musicology Department is the only one in China whose focus is on traditional Chinese music. Moreover, the Musicology Department offers courses available to all students in the Conservatory, such as: Chinese Song, Chinese Opera Music, Chinese Instrumental Music, Chinese Melodic Patterns, and Chinese and Western Music History.
The Musicology Department is divided into the following divisions: Music History, Ethnomusicology (primarily Chinese), and Music Reproduction and Editing (recording technology). Courses for Musicology majors include Chinese Ancient Music History, Chinese Modern Music History, Western Music History, Chinese Traditional Music, An Overview of Ethnomusicology, Minority Ethnomusicology, and Musical Aesthetics.
